About us

Together for Riverina traces it’s origins back to 2020 when kitchen table conversations were run in Riverina by Voices 4 Riverina, and separately in the Yass Valley (before the Yass Valley and other areas become part of the Riverina electorate in 2024). In 2021 Voices 4 Riverina published the Riverina Reimagined report summarising visions from the kitchen table conversations (KTCs) .

The 2024 electoral redistribution brought these communities and groups into the same electorate. An initial meeting in November 2024, agreed to form Together for Riverina (TFR) and seek a community independent candidate for the 2025 election to reflect the aspirations expressed in the KTCs.

Together for Riverina ran a quick community survey, followed by a public candidate preselection process. This led to the endorsement of Jenny Rolfe as a community independent candidate for Riverina in the 2025 Federal Election.

In just a four short months Jenny and her Rolfe for Riverina campaign team ran a strong community powered campaign, driven by listening to community concerns and attracting over 6500 supporters at the ballot box.

After the election, the Rolfe for Riverina campaign evaluation identified the need for more grassroots conversations and actions to help rebuild trust that the democratic process can bring about meaningful change in our everyday lives. It’s a call that echoes the sentiments expressed in the kitchen table conversations going back to 2020.

This is now TFR’s main focus, creating spaces that enable everyone to be part of the democratic conservation. It’s a call that echoes the sentiments expressed in the kitchen table conversations going back to 2020. Democracy is about so much more than just voting for someone else, it needs us all to be involved. TFR is proud to continue this work and we’ve updated our statements of vision and purpose as follows.

Our Vision

A Riverina community engaged in vibrant democratic conversations that allow everyone to be heard.

Our Purpose

To enable the voices of the people of Riverina to influence policy.

    COOTAMUNDRA

James believes that good decisions arise from good processes that allow all voices to be heard. This requires us all to speak up, and to listen. Working together, we have the capacity to face up to, and address the challenges in front of us.

James trained as a facilitator and has spent over 20 years helping groups work together to achieve their vision. He has helped to establish collaborative decision-making processes in the youth, education, environment and local government sectors. His passions led to him helping to start Voices4Cowper when he lived in Coffs Harbour and he’s excited to find a group of like-minded people here in Riverina.

James is now a proud dad living in Cootamundra, where he enjoys the benefits of living in a small community, bushwalking and being able to grow a few veggies.

    GUNDEROO

Cate moved to Gunderoo in the beautiful Yass Valley in the early 2010’s where she finally found her ‘tribe’. She comes from a long line of wool growers in rural northern Tasmania and western NSW. Her farming passions are agroforestry, managing native grasslands for pasture & profit, access to abattoirs for small producers and regen farming practices.

Cate has a varied career background including sociological research for the Uni of Wollongong, the Australian & ACT Public Service, ethical funds management, and her favourite, the ACT community mental health sector. In her time with Australian Parliament House Parliamentary Services she got to know every corner of the building, including the behind-the-scenes art collection and to experience the frenetic pace of parliamentary sitting weeks. This inspired her interest in government, policy, and the power of community independents.

Cate has made some great new friends in her time with Together for Riverina and is committed to strengthening TfR’s connections across the electorate. She can’t wait to get to know more people from Riverina and to hear about the issues that affect them.
